(ever the stranger until he's fully settled with someone, jonas lingers by the entry until they've exchanged niceties. sakura is welcomingโand bizarrely comforting to see againโbut he wonders if that's her default setting or a face she has to put on.)
Actually, I'm shockingly fine, all things considered. The, uh... existential dread comes and goes. Today's an "no wallowing" dayโand I brought fish. (dropping into the chair, the twin lunches, brown-bagged, are held up before they're set aside for later.)
๏ผ how many people have actually asked her that, with that level of earnest interest, since she's been here? precious few, and it's evident by the way her cheerful expression flickers that she wasn't anticipating having to have an answer at the ready for that.
and then it's all over, as if he could have imagined it entirely, and she's waving one hand theatrically. ๏ผ
Ah, it's fine! I've been so busy, I don't really have time to be anything else, haha.
๏ผ that is the worst fake laugh she's ever done, why this. why did he put the lunch over there. she could have used it as a distraction!! damnit, jonas! why do you thwart her. ๏ผ
Though... I will say, I miss seeing the sun. It's strange how you can take something so much for granted, you don't notice it until it's gone.
(jonas, occasionally absentminded, doesn't notice the blip in sakura's expression. in a way, however, he winds up not needing to have seen it.) Busy, yeah... you know, I don't think I've seen you just hanging out yet.
(where this is going is nowhere good. there's an obvious buildup happening, and any second now, sakura will be told to take a load off. to go out, enjoy herself, and leave work alone for a moment.)
You're right, though, the grey sky's a huge bummer. If I didn't know any better, I'd seriously think we were just in one big massive cave. (two fans of wild gesturing, his own hands raise to approximate the size.) You really dodged a bullet there, actually; I could've forced you to go sunbathing with me. This healthy glow takes work.
she is still making up for what feels like a lifetime of sitting ineffectually on the sidelines. this girl has a whole-ass complex about feeling inadequate and useless that can't simply be banished by being told to take a load off. ๏ผ
Well, as it happens you don't spend every waking hour with me...
๏ผ that's said playfully, accompanied by a cheeky little smile. let him think she spends countless hours in decadent lounging, tbqh. ๏ผ
Ah, I'd love sunbathing, though... I wonder if anyone's come up with a substitute? We may actually need to worry about our vitamin D levels in the dark...
(hanging his head, jonas raises his arms in defeat.)
Wow, touchรฉ, (he admits, but that only makes him ponder.) I really don't know that much about you. Good thing? Bad thing? Neutral, maybe. Sometimes this much is alright.
(that was the goal, wasn't it? they spoke about this before, however briefly; jonas won't ask too many questions and sakura will decide whether or not he's trustworthy. it hasn't been long.)
You know, the last thing I thought I'd have to worry about in my afterlife was vitamins. Seriously, if they don't have all the relevant ones condensed into a tiny sugary block I can choke down every morning with my cereal, I'll take the weak bones.
(haruno sakura: so whip-smart that the inane ramblings and whims of blessedly average eighteen-year-olds can generate up to ten ideas at any given moment. her entrepreneurial spirit will revolutionize stygian medicine.)
Yes, Doctor Haruno... (it's said in a sarcastically sad way. if he ever doubted her status, he couldn't refute it at all now. "take your vitamins, jonas" is such a doctor thing to say.
but she'll be the only one who hasn't charged his family an arm and a leg for the advice.)
Oregonโuh, it's this state within my countryโhas a ton of beaches. The most beautiful one is Cannon Beach, man, you'd lose your mind. The ocean is so blue and it seems to go on forever. It feels like you're right on the edge of the world. (dreamily, jonas looks up at the cover over their heads and sighs out. it makes him nostalgic for home, and though that's a sharp pain in his chest now, it's still good to be reminded of it.)
I've never been to a hot spring, but they sound awesome. Just soaking all your cares away... does that make your home, like, mountainous or something? Aren't hot springs near volcanoes?
๏ผ such a doctor. she'd ruffle his hair if he was closer!! ๏ผ
And... well, my country isn't called the Land of Fire for nothing!
๏ผ they do have beaches there, with black volcanic sand, but the long stretch of land that's closest to kirigakure is historically quite dangerous, and it isn't as though her missions generally take her to relaxing locales. ๏ผ
We do have a mountainous region, though, and a lot of old growth forests. It's lovely. But your Oregon sounds so too! I wish I could see it.
(the "good boy" is received with a pronounced roll of olive eyes, though the expression is only complete after jonas tacks on a tired little smile at its finish.)
You... kinda could, if you really wanted to. It's notโit's like a... a freaky version of it, at least, whichโwow, I am messing this invite up big time. (a chuckle eases his tension, finding it easier to stop to mock himself than stammer over something he wasn't likely to get out in one go.) In my Door in the Shadowlands, there is an island. The island was off the coast of the town I moved to before winding up here.
(his next question is odd. even he looks surprised as if it skipped all security checks on the way out of him.)
๏ผ she arches one eyebrow as he struggles his way through that offer, and she finds herself pointedly looking away so he doesn't have to suffer under additional scrutiny, tucking her hair behind her ear with one hand while the second reaches for that bagged lunch. ๏ผ
I'd love to see it.
๏ผ there. easy, right? but his second question... ๏ผ
I can't imagine living anywhere else.
๏ผ it's honest enough, but it's hardly a complete truth. she holds no doubt in her mind that konoha is better than the other villages, many of which are worse or more brutal, but... her home isn't without its flaws.
still, she's protective of it. only those that share her home are allowed to share in her criticisms of it, and it's not something she'd discuss so easily with someone not of her world. ๏ผ
Okay. (it may be a winded, tired reply, but it's a grateful one.) And that's important, I think. Not, like, patriotism or whatever, but enjoying where you're at.
(in the brown bag sakura picks up is a poorly packed assortment of food. the effort is clear, though depressing; each item is individually bundled in cling wrap. there is a triangular piece of sort-of squished fish cut from a whole filet, three small, cooked red potatoes, and the heel of a ciabatta loafโall rapidly cooling from their previous lukewarm temperatures, insulated by absolutely nothing.
jonas gestures to it, his soul dying inside of his body translating externally as a demure blush.)
Oh, uh... I said I'd make you something, but I'm sorry about... whatever that is.
Everything started to go wrong around the time I realized I didn't have any Tupperware to put my cooking in. It should still taste alright, justโI used a lot of salt by accident, but salt makes everything better anyway, I figure.
๏ผ she still sets it all out like it's a king's feast, pulling some chipped plates out of one of her desk drawers. she eats here more often than not, and as a consequence she has most of the amenities one could want tucked away in various nooks and crannies.
... besides, the men in her life don't exactly trip over themselves to make her food, okay? salt or no, she's going to enjoy this. ๏ผ
(stares down at the sad-ass banquet. traumatizing..........)
Well, not the ciabatta butโwait, you're totally teasing me right now, aren't you? (immediately, jonas begins to chuckle, tension gone from his shoulders.) Look, okayโrest assured, I'm ordering takeout next time. That's all I have to say about that.
Mm-hm, (he hums, his mock skepticism unable to last when she continues with the rest of her sentiment.)
I think so, too. I mean... if the meal totally sucks big-time, then random takeout being brought to me might mean a wee bit more than the alternative, but it is nice, I grant you.
(starts gnawing at his piece of ciabatta like a savage)
Can you cook? Like, what would be your favourite thing to cook if you had all the ingredients and stuff?
๏ผ silly jonas, asking a woman born to a world where 'housewife' is the default if she can cook. sakura laughs a bit, tucking an errant piece of hair behind one ear. she misses her headband, but hasn't really found anything yet to replace it, and the hitai-ate is safe behind the door of her soul room, a little piece of herself she isn't yet ready to share with anyone here. ๏ผ
I can, though I don't very often. I wouldn't say I'm incredible at it or anything, but I can follow a recipe.
๏ผ kunoichi were taught flower arrangement to conceal and smuggle lethal poisons into an otherwise innocuous situation, just like they were taught to cook meals one could serve to an enemy. her training as a shinobi was quite different than naruto and sasuke's, well before they ever graduated as genin. ๏ผ
