[ Sandalphon nods, finding the name simple to say (but he also thinks his own name is simple). For now, he can't make a first impression of him yet. Seems friendly? Jonas smiled at him, but he realized most mortals do that... Smile for no reason, but the handshake has a purpose. Gladly, he takes it and gives it a stern shake before retracting his hand. ]
... I'm not sure if you would call it magic. [ How is it best explained? Stroking his chin, he approaches the table, but doesn't take a seat. ] It's innate—what I had. It wasn't something learned, except for the power that wasn't originally mine. Magic is honed through practice, even if one is a "natural," if I understood the Witches properly. Yourself?
[ And what else is natural for him is to take whatever looks closest to a weapon on the table. ]
So you mean it's like, another sense or limb or something? (tilting his head into the question, quietly curious about sandalphon's immediate reach for enchantment testing.
interesting first instinct. jonas picks the most innocuous thing on the table, a thick book that seems to weigh as much as a thin paperback. neat.)
That's pretty cool. Sorry if I drag our group down, I've never used magic before in my life. I've read a lot of fantasy books with that kinda' thing in it, but that's not exactly practice or anything. (his attention turns briefly to the teacher who goes over their current objective: choose an item; familiarize yourself with the item; imbue your partner's item.) This seems way more fun than any of my old classes, though, so I'm not complaining.
You like that one, huh? (points at the weapon in sandalphon's possession.) What do you wanna' be able to do with it?
Yes, much like that. [ Using his powers was all instinct. ] Do not worry. Instead, think about how you can improve—we're all here to learn.
[ Sandalphon may have picked up the staff? Is it? But he seems more concerned about Jonas' approach to their aptitude test. The last thing he would want is for his partner to feel like he's a burden. When the attention is brought back to his choice, though... He looks at the item in his hand with a discerning eye. ]
I suppose enchantment? I was never one to control the elements... A weapon in my hand feels right.
[ Then, naturally, he looks to the book his partner holds. What is that? Let him see it? ]
(unexpectedly warm encouragements are a bit embarrassing to swallow, but jonas gives a light chuckle and nods at the sentiment.) Yeah, yeah, you're right. I'll try to be optimistic about it. (more a realist, willing to accept he might failβinstead of getting too bogged down overthinking things, he offers sandalphon a peek at the book.)
If I had something to store spells in, I think I could be more effective. So like, I don't know what enchantments exist for books, but it sounds pretty cool?
(gestures to his partner's staff with a easily impressed "ooo.") Dude, you'd look like such a badass wizard carrying that around. Maybe we can make it light up, or like... detect magic and stuff, like a dousing rod.
Unless you intend to hit your enemies with your book, I'm not too sure how enhancements would work in this case.
[ Because Sandalphon isn't too privy, he only knows one notion of enchantment? And also a narrow expertise for combat—physical or instinct. However, he does think about how it could be different in Jonas case. Maybe enchanting the book would increase casting speed? Skill potency?
A veteran witch overhears them, then corrects Sandalphon that enchantment isn't always an item, it could be a person. Likewise, it isn't always imbueing something with power, but also having power over a target. As an example, charming a target. Hearing that, Sandalphon wrinkles his nose with a furrowed brow.
No, he doesn't like that.
A dousing rod with a staff though... The veteran mentions they can do that using Divination and it might be easier for them to channel it through an object for now. ]
Do you wish to make an attempt to make an attempt?
[ Jonas would need to cast a spell if they want the rod to detect anything? Sandalphon can work on the divination part. ]
this is so late, i am so sorry... no wi-fi, no life...
Ha ha, (it may sound sarcastic, but he's ultimately amused and already having a good time discussing prospects,) point taken. Maybe like, something that can... make the tome lighter to carry? Or we could enchant it to flip automatically to a page you think of?
There are endless possibilities here, dude. And I'm ready to try 'em all. Let's do this.
(ROLLING UP HIS SLEEVES, even wiggling his fingers as though getting ready to cast some serious, life-changing magic. then remembers that he'll probably need to follow the guide they've been given, peeking at the paper handout before clearing his throat.)
Okay, so it looks like we need to place hands on the staff and work the magic into it. Since it's your staff, you can take care of that part and I can try to cast something on it? (sounds a bit challenging, but he recalls his previous classes and how best to access his magic. through incantations or quotes that've become meaningful to him.) Here goes nothing.
βmagelight.
(eyes closed, jonas feels golden, syrupy energy swirl to fill cupped hands. eventually it reaches the bounds of what he can carry, swelling up to form an orb that sheds light on their faces in pretty yellow fractals. a light spell for the darkest of places, not too keen on casting anything harmful.)
